Fickle mankind!
When force and change
Wildly derange
The casual mind
      On chance begotten,

Trust in the Lord,
For that is best,
As for the rest,
Though not ignored
     And not forgotten,

The heart not whole
Not quite at ease,
Here finds some peace,
Some wealth of soul,
     Albeit ill-gotten.

Volúvel humanidade!
Quando força e mudança
Violentamente perturbam
A mente trivial
     Gerada pelo azar,

Confia no Senhor,
Que é o melhor.
Quanto ao resto,
Embora não ignorado
     E não esquecido,

O coração dividido
E pouco à vontade.
Encontra aqui, alguma paz,
Alguma fortuna de alma,
     Embora imerecida.
