Grandmothers who wring the necks

Of chickens; old nuns

With names like Theresa, Marianne,

Who pull schoolboys by the ear;

The intricate steps of pickpockets

Working the crowd of the curious

At the scene of an accident; the slow shuffle

Of the evangelist with a sandwich-board;

The hesitation of the early morning costumer

Peeking through the window-grille

Of a pawnshop; the weave of a little kid

Who is walking to school with eyes closed.

And the ancient lovers, cheek to cheek,

On the dancefloor of the Union Hall,

Where they also hold charity raffles

On rainy Monday nights of an eternal November.

DANÇAS DE SALÃO CLÁSSICAS

Avós que torcem pescoços 

De galinhas; freiras velhas

Com nomes como Theresa, Marianne,

Que puxam as orelhas dos alunos;

Os passos intricados de carteiristas

Trabalhando a multidão de curiosos

No local de um acidente; o andar lento

Do evangelista ensaduichado num cartaz;

A hesitação do cliente madrugador

Espreitando pela grelha da janela

De uma casa de penhores; os baldões de uma criança 

Que caminha para a escola de olhos fechados;

E os velhos amantes, de cara encostada,

No piso de dança do Union Hall,

Onde também se realizam sorteios de caridade

Em noites chuvosas de segunda-feira de um Novembro eterno.
