POETICAL JUSTICE

It will be many years before I read again

Of the death of Cordelia,

Or indeed (though he deserves cuffing)

Of the Macduff's boy stabbing.

(Instead I shall read of the dissolution

Of science-fictional monsters,

Or the gonorrhoea of modern heroines.)

That such things happen in life is no cause

For them to happen in literature.

It is true that all reasonable beings

Naturally love justice,

Then where should they hope to find it?

I prefer to hear of such unlikely events

As Hermione surviving in private, or

Isabella furnished with a ducal husband.

(Some have tried, too late to save Cordelia.)

In life we barely choose our words even,

Only those we hurt will still recall them.

Art, they say, continues life by other means -

How other they are?

Passarão muitos anos antes que releia

A morte de Cordélia

Ou mesmo (embora mereça ser esbofeteado)

A punhalada no filho de Macduff.

(Em vez disso lerei sobre a dissolução

De monstros de ficção científica

Ou a gonorreia de heroínas modernas.)

Que tais coisas aconteçam na vida não é razão 

Para que aconteçam na literatura.

Se é verdade que 'todos os seres razoáveis

Amam naturalmente a justiça',

Então onde esperarão encontrá-la?

Prefiro saber de acontecimentos tão improváveis

Como Hermione sobrevivendo em privado, ou

Isabella dotada com um marido ducal.

(Alguns tentaram, demasiado tarde, salvar Cordélia.)

Na vida quase nem sequer escolhemos as palavras,

Apenas aqueles que magoamos ainda as recordarão.

A arte, dizem, continua a vida por outros meios -

Quão outros são eles?
